Hi 5th graders & families,

Because of various school events, our previous science schedule has changed. Please see our new schedule below.
The Respiratory System will be the last animal system we're studying in 5th grade. I will add an updated calendar for the rest of the month of June.

Please be sure to check Tuesday night's homework, click here

Animal Systems Unit- Introduction

Hi 5th graders & families!

This week we will being the Animal Systems portion of our Life Science study. There are four systems that we will be investigating during this unit- the Circulatory System, Digestive System, Excretory System and Respiratory System. Our Essential Question for this part of our Life Science Unit is - "How do animal systems work?" Below is our tentative calendar with quiz and test dates. Please take note of these in your homework journal.

We are going to investigate the Digestive System through two activities - "The Great Saltine Challenge" and "Digestion in a Bag". Each student is asked to bring in a supply for these activities,  please see the supply list below. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Please bring your item to school no later than Friday, May 10th. Thank you in advance!

Thursday: TEST

Please make sure to review everything in your packet and our blog in order to study for the test on Friday. If you have any missing work from this unit it MUST be turned in to my "Drop Box" in the classroom by Thursday (before the test).

Weekly Update

Hello 5th graders!

This week we are identifying...
- the specialized structures in plants & their functions
- what materials are transported in a vascular plant
- what plants use, build and release

Families- please check out our 5th grade science bulletin board in the school hallway to see photos of our plant investigation from last week.

Next Tuesday we will have a wonderful opportunity to spend time learning about plants in our school garden!

Make it a great day :)

Weekly Update

Hello 5th graders & families!

This week we are beginning our unit on Plants. I am very excited to explore Life Science with you! The knowledge you gained while exploring Life Science from Kindergarten through 4th grade will be very valuable for you during this unit. Below is a list of the "big concepts" you've studied in Life Science so far. What do you remember learning about in Life Science from grades K-4?

K: Types of Plants/ Animals- Different types of plants and animals inhabit the earth.
1: Needs of Plants/ Animals- Plants and animals meet their needs in different ways.
2: Life Cycles- Plants and animals have predictable life cycles.
3: Adaptations- Adaptations in physical structure or behavior may improve an organism's chance for survival.
4: Food Webs- All organisms need energy and matter to live and grow.
4: Interdependence- Living organisms depend on one another and on their environment for survival.

In 5th grade Life Science we will be investigating plant structures and analyzing how these structures transport materials. What does that mean?!! ... We will find out :) Our Essential Question for this first part of our Life Science unit is: How do plant structures work? We will explore our Essential Question on "plants" for 9 days, and then move on to learning about "animals".

On April 25th you will be given the Life Science: Plants Test, so please take note of this in your homework journal.

Make it a great day!
